Brief Description

Many local businesses deliver boxes of fresh, locally grown vegetables and fruit to households that have placed a regular order. Your task in this project is to develop an information management system to support a vegetable box business.

The system should be able to keep track of customers and suppliers, and the details of the fruit and vegetables received from suppliers and delivered to customers, and the payments due and made. The vegetable box business will normally vary the selection of vegetables according to what is in season and available without notifying the customers, who understand that this is part of the deal. However a useful feature would be the ability to adapt orders according to likes and dislikes, such as being keen on kohlrabi and disliking kale. It would also be desirable to allow for larger and smaller regular boxes, and to enable customers to suspend their regular orders, for example when they are on holiday, and place special orders either for larger boxes or for particular items.

Extensions

The system should enable the staff to track how much of different fruit and vegetables the customers want and whether this matches what they get, and to anticipate demand to enable them to work with their suppliers to obtain the right quantities of different vegetables.

Ideally the system would provide help with scheduling delivery runs, and allow customers to specify their regular delivery times and vary them when they need to.

Variants

A possible extension would be to build a simulator to drive a test of the system over time, with random and seasonal variations in the types and quantities of vegetables. Alternatively, a very different project could focus on developing a simulation model of supply and demand at a vegetable box business.
