Employment
1985-1986
Department of Computer Science, Carnegie-Mellon University
Research Programmer in Expert Systems Group.
I worked on the development of knowledge acquisition tools for expert systems,
in OPS5 and C, as a member of the Expert Systems Research Group led by Dr. John McDermott.
1993-1994
MRC Applied Psychology Unit, Cambridge
Scientific Officer on ERMIA Project.
I worked with Dr. Thomas Green on the development of ERMIA diagram analyses
of the structure of data graphs and their emergent features, as part of the ERMIA Project,
which included Dr David Benyon, Dr Marian Petre and Dr Denise Whitelock at the Open University.
1994-1996
Department of Computing, The Open University
Research Fellow on FACADE Project.
I worked with Prof George Rzevski, Dr. Helen Sharp, Dr. Marian Petre and
Rodney Buckland on the development of human computer interaction and
artificial intelligence techniques for providing effective computer support for
the early conceptual design of mechatronic systems. I implemented in Smalltalk a
knowledge representation scheme for conceptual designs of multi-technology
engineering products.
1996-2002
Department of Computer and Information Sciences, De Montfort University, Milton Keynes
Senior Lecturer
I taught human computer interaction, object oriented programming,
and systems analysis and design methods. I pursued research on the artificial intelligence and
human computer interaction aspects of computer support for design,
as well as on the psychology of design and methods for modelling design processes.
Much of my work was in collaboration with Dr Claudia Eckert of the Engineering Design
Centre at the University of Cambridge; this has included participation in the
MIND Project (Mechanisms of Inspiration in Novel Design) at the Open University,
and making contributions to the Signposting Project at the Cambridge EDC.
2002-Present
Faculty of Technology, De Montfort University, Leicester
Senior Lecturer
I am teaching programming, object-oriented design and web publishing.
I am continuing my collaborative research with Prof Claudia Eckert of the Open University;
this has included participation in the Across Design project on comparative analyses of design processes.
Other Experience
1980 Project Trust Volunteer School Teacher in Kenya
Before going to university, I worked for eight months in rural Harambee schools
in Kenya, teaching secondary-level Mathematics, Physics and Biology, as a volunteer
with Project Trust.
1981 Volunteer Research Assistant on a Psychology Project in Zambia and Zimbabwe
During my first university summer vacation I worked as a volunteer for
Dr Jan Deregowski and Dr Suzanne Dziurawiec of the University of Aberdeen on a
cross-cultural psychology project investigating differences in the perception of
three dimensional spatial information in two dimensional line-drawing pictures.
